Event Overview

|
 |
This event took place on 2nd April 2006 at the Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York City.
The conference was geared towards patients and their families, focusing on diagnosis and management
of carcinoid and other neuroendocrine tumors (NETs).
Scientists are making rapid progress in researching the causes of carcinoid and developing novel,
targeted therapies. Among these are the so-called anti-angiogenesis therapies, typically chemotherapies
which use drugs to stop cancerous tumors from developing new blood vessels. Other
lines of research treat carcinoid and NETS as genetic disorders.
The distinguished guest speaker for this lecture is Dr. James C. Yao. He is Assistant Professor of
GI Medical Oncology at the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston Texas. Dr. Yao shares his extensive experience
with these new targeted therapies, in particular his collaboration in medical trials of Avastin, an
anti-angiogenesis treatment, and in separate trials of experimental drugs which inhibit the gene mTOR.
Dr. Richard Warner, Medical Director of the Carcinoid Cancer Foundation, provides a clearly outlined introduction
and overview for Dr. Yao's presentation. Later the two are joined by a panel of physicians who respond to questions
posed by the audience. The questions are read aloud by Dr. Warner, based on notes taken by audience members
during the lecture. The responses clarify issues that may not have been fully elaborated by the speakers.
As is usual for such a conference, the audience is comprised of patients and caregivers, with many coming from states outside of New York.
These conferences provide a chance for attendees
to reconnect and share personal experiences. Selected
event photos are available for viewing and your comments are welcome.
